One of the biggest lies satan has ever convinced people of is that as long as we’re good, we’ll go to heaven. That it’s only the “bad” people that go to hell. Perhaps you have heard this or even believe it to be true. Perhaps you believe that you are a Christian because you do mostly “good” things and if you did a “bad” thing, then you’ve certainly done enough “good” to make up for it. Although it made for a very humorous movie, the bird lady on Home Alone 2 did not give Kevin McCallister very sound spiritual advice when she told him something similar.

And while I would never want to dissuade someone from doing good deeds or the right thing, the fact is, friend, it just doesn’t work this way.

Romans 3:23 states that we have all fallen short of God’s glorious standard. What is God’s standard? Holiness. Perfection. And every single person who has ever walked this earth other than Jesus Christ has fallen short of that standard.

Allow me to give an illustration: Picture God’s Law as though it’s been engraved or printed on a giant sheet of glass. If it is broken, it’s broken. Even if it’s partially broken or just “chipped” on the corner, it’s still broken. As Christians, we believe God’s law was fulfilled in full by Jesus Christ’s life, death, burial, and resurrection. However, Jesus also says that we are to live out the commandments: loving God with all our hearts, soul, mind, and strength, and loving others like we love ourselves. This is God’s law, and we are to live this out to spread the Gospel and bring glory to His Name.

Notice the picture of the rocks at the top. Some are small, some are big. This is the same way we view our sin: some small, some big, but ours are definitely smaller than that other person’s right? The trouble with this is that it all breaks the glass; all our sin, whether “big” or “small”, breaks the glass. It all puts us in a state of unholiness. It all puts us in a state of less than perfect.

So what are we to do? Friend, there’s nothing we can do to get ourselves back to a place of total purity. That’s why we need Christ! No matter what you’ve done, no matter your sin, big or small in the eyes of man, Christ offers forgiveness to us! He can and will set us free from the bondages of sin if we will only repent and receive the forgiveness He has freely made available to us! Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
