I’ve gone back to college to finish a business and accounting degree.  One of my classes discusses the legal side of businesses and as I was defining some terms a few days ago, I was reminded of the goodness of God.

Mediator – a method of settling disputes outside the courts by using the services of a neutral 3rd party who acts as a communicating agent between the parties and assists them in negotiating a settlement.

1 Timothy 2:5 NLT tells us “For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.”

When sin entered the world, a dispute was created between man and God. There was and still is nothing mortal man can do to put back together what was broken because it was created by a holy God. We simply don’t have that kind of power. Bearing the weight of our sin is too much. It’s a debt we can’t pay, one where the interest is ever compounding. We need help.

In comes Christ. Hebrews 9:15 NLT says “That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.”

Through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are offered freedom! He takes our case and mediates between us and our Heavenly Father. He acts as the neutral 3rd party even though He would have every right from our human perspective to not only not help but to take a side against us! How good is His grace!

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21

He never did a thing wrong but He took the punishment we deserved and then ALSO mediates between the Father and us.

Hebrews 8:6 states “But now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who mediates for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises.”

Jesus does this for us because it’s His ministry (work done to help others). He cares for us and God is His mercy sent Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins so that we could be set free. We don’t deserve it; we can’t earn it; and we’ll never be able to repay it. But we can accept it.

If you feel drawn by Holy Spirit and recognize your own personal need for a mediator, call out to Him. He will answer. Confess you are a sinner in need of a Savior and repent of your sins. He will come in and start changing your heart, your mind, and your life.
